Diego Costa Defends Jose Mourinho, Admits Starting Chelsea's Season Overweight

Chelsea striker Diego Costa has hit back at criticism of manager Jose Mourinho following the Blues' poor start to the new term and admitted he returned "overweight" for pre-season training.

The defending Premier League champions have won only twice in eight matches in 2015-16 and currently lie 16th in the English top flight, which has led to Mourinho's methods being questioned, per Tony Banks in the Express.

However, Costa believes Mourinho is being unfairly blamed for Chelsea's woes and suggested the Portuguese manager's directness invites unfounded criticism, per Darren Lewis in the Mirror:

When things don’t go the way that everyone expects, people - the supporters as well - always look for someone to blame.

There’s no doubt it’s because of the way he is. He’s very direct, very straightforward.

He always speaks what he thinks and what he believes to be the truth. Sometimes it’s not what people want to hear. It’s the way he is and it’s why sometimes they criticise him.

Certainly, Mourinho's combative style is not to everyone's liking, but he is far from blameless for Chelsea's poor early-season form.

He has chopped and changed his team dramatically, sporadically benching key players like John Terry, Eden Hazard and Nemanja Matic, and Bleacher Report's Sam Tighe has branded him the Premier League's most disappointing manager so far this season:

Costa has largely survived Mourinho's frantic rotation in 2015-16, although he did miss out on three of Chelsea's most recent matches after picking up a ban following the Blues' defeat of Arsenal.

The 27-year-old has been significantly less effective this term than he was while winning the Premier League in his debut season with Chelsea in 2014-15.

Costa has accepted responsibility for his poor form by admitting he returned for pre-season "a little bit overweight," a factor that has had an adverse effect on his game, per the Daily Mail's Matt Barlow.

He is far from the only Chelsea player to have underperformed in the new campaign, but considering Mourinho's dearth of quality alternative options up front, the Spaniard's lack of form has been noticeable.

Costa has not been called up to the Spain squad for their two upcoming Euro 2016 qualifiers, per the Sunday World's Kevin Palmer:

Xavi Tells Fans to Stop Booing Gerard Pique Ahead of Spain Euro Qualifier

Barcelona legend Xavi has called on Real Madrid fans to stop booing Gerard Pique ahead of Spain's European Championship qualifier with Luxembourg on Friday.

Pique has been booed by Real fans since mocking the club's inability to win La Liga, the Copa del Rey or Champions League in 2014/15, specifically commenting on Cristiano Ronaldo's controversial 30th birthday celebrations with Colombian rapper Kevin Roldan back in February.

Speaking at an event organised by personal training equipment company Tocball, Xavi said, relayed by Marca:

The time has come for fans to whistle less and show more support. He’s representing Spain, he wants to play and Real Madrid fans whistle him because of what he said at the Camp Nou [in reference to Kevin Roldan], but that’s it. Pique is an extraordinary player and makes a difference both at Barca and for Spain, he’s one of the best central defenders in the world. Fans should show him more respect.

Reigning champions Spain will secure their place at Euro 2016 with a win in Logrono on Friday.

Will Cristiano Ronaldo Finish His Career at Real Madrid?

Under contract with Real Madrid until the 2017/18 season, why Cristiano Ronaldo's future is such a massive topic has yet to be divulged. Nothing is more infuriating than manufactured smoke, and Los Blancos' former boss, Carlo Ancelotti, has attempted to throw water on burgeoning fumes.

The five-time UEFA Champions League winner—twice as a player, thrice as a manager—told Le Parisien (via ESPN FC's Mark Rodden): "I don't see Ronaldo changing clubs. I think he'll finish his career at Real Madrid where everyone likes him."

Managing one of the world's most recognisable sportsmen for two seasons, Ancelotti is in an advantageous place to speculate about Ronaldo's Madrid future. Moreover, his previous employment with Paris Saint-Germain could have garnered the French publication some latitude—but the Italian was rather definitive.
Calculating the long-term viability of 30-year-old footballers is challenging. Some have the capability of playing at high levels for years, while others fall off cliffs. Given his exceptional conditioning and unquestioned talent, Ronaldo (who turns 31 in February) should have at least three seasons of world-class football left in his tank.

The questions to answer are: Will Real Madrid want an aging superstar (as they are normally last to realise they have fallen off)? Second, and possibly more important: Will the Portugal international want to play past a certain age—one that could make him a liability to his current employers?

Only Ronaldo could attempt to answer the latter—but answering the former is not as straightforward as it seems.

Rafa Benitez, filling the prestigious boots of Ancelotti, has attempted to establish his own brand of football at the Santiago Bernabeu. The 4-3-3 of yesteryear has been replaced by the 4-2-3-1—with Gareth Bale seeing unprecedented minutes in the No. 10 role. Other than a spellbinding, five-goal tour de force vs. Espanyol, Ronaldo has been held scoreless in six of Madrid's opening seven La Liga fixtures.

Whether basic functionality or inconvenience in a new system, Real's talisman has yet to mesh with new management. Ronaldo's quality makes him a key component in any formational composition, but getting the best from him (as with every footballer) takes ideal circumstances.

Benitez could be the last manager to have "peak Ronaldo" under his wing. Being a generational talent, the Spanish boss must find ways to maximise the 30-year-old's various talents before Father Time starts taking invariable commissions.

Come 2018/19, Ronaldo will be 33. Before we reach that point, there will be likely be contract sagas and speculations of returning to either Sporting or Manchester United. Madrid, beforehand, must determine whether his on-pitch value equals both his wages and marketing prowess.

Even in his mid-30s, the three-time Ballon d'Or winner will possess the international clout to warrant continuation, but athleticism (which is the hallmark of his game) is Real's primary variable. How Ronaldo copes with an ageing frame will decide his fate in an all-white kit.

There are not better clubs for the Portugal captain to ply his trade for.
Additionally, Madrid have shown, with the likes of Iker Casillas and others, they are willing to accommodate accomplished veterans in their squad (at least for a period). No previous veteran, though, would have had the financial and production credentials that Ronaldo carries—making him an almost singular case.

Ronaldo has moved before (so him moving again is not foreign) but there seems every possibility he will stay in the Spanish capital for the foreseeable future, possibly until the 2018/19 season.

Motivation and desire are whimsical notions in many respects, changing from day to day. So for projecting his exact retirement, not even Ronaldo could see that far.

The 25 Best Online University For 2015

7.1 million Americans took for-credit classes online in 2013, with a large portion of these students completing their entire degree online. Online education is relatively new, but now it’s mainstream. There are more online colleges than ever, increasing competition, offerings, and overall value for students. Skill-based learning is particularly on the rise online, and most employers now report that they don’t see any difference between degrees obtained fully online and those obtained through more traditional methods.

With the increased acceptance and range of high quality programs available fully online, we’ve decided to revamp our best online college rankings for 2015. At Best College Reviews we’ve learned over the years what students value the most in online education: affordability, flexibility, and quality support and instruction. This year, we surveyed over 400 institutions providing at least one bachelor’s degree fully online. Because institutions only providing a limited range of online degrees aren’t what most students want when it comes to attending an online college, we then narrowed the field by looking at the 80+ institutions that provide ten or more degrees fully online.

We then ranked those 80+ surveyed institutions according to the following metrics:

Best Online Colleges Methodology

Affordability: the average cost of attendance for one semester taking 15 credit hours
Flexibility: the number of bachelor’s degree-granting programs that may be obtained fully online, coupled with the flexibility with which students may obtain a degree
Academic Rigor and Support: the strength and reputation of the online program’s parent institution as well as the range of support services for online college students.
Data from the Distance Education Council, Peterson’s, and the National Center for Education Statistics was used in compiling this list.

Online Masters Degree

An online Masters program may be exactly what you need to complete your degree and improve your scope. These Masters programs provide an opportunity for students to obtain a great deal of knowledge and more in-depth study in their chosen field. In other cases, students can embrace a complimentary, but different course of study to gather a new prospective and potentially new work paths. In all cases, obtaining an online Masters degree is one of the best opportunities available to today's student.

Benefits of Taking an Online Master Now

Take an online Master program and you'll see just how many benefits there are. First, you can select any global university to take your advanced degree since most schools recognize these programs and apply credit for them. In addition, you'll find some excellent opportunities available, including education that allows you to explore other cultures and ways of thinking. But, why online?

Online Masters degrees provide the student with the opportunity to learn at anytime from anywhere without having to worry about the risks it poses to the family or budget. You can tap into a school's curriculum in a country in Europe for example, and not have to travel to do so.

Types of Online Masters Programs

Masters degree programs come in all sizes and shapes. You'll find a program that fits your particular course of study at one of the many universities located throughout the world. Some options include:

Arts and Humanities programs
Business Administration and Management programs
Engineering and Technology programs
Law and Regulations programs
Natural Sciences programs
Biological, Life, and Health Sciences
Each university offering a master program will alter what you learn significantly within the curriculum. Nevertheless, most schools pack these programs with incredible expertise and ample information so that you are getting more of what you don't know and a more in-depth level of education than you could working in the field or simply counting on your bachelor's degree.

Differences in Costs and Duration

Globally, most Master degree programs will run for 18 months to 3 years. Most are about two years long. However, when you enroll in an online Master, you'll find that opportunities exist for speeding up this timeframe or shortening it, depending on how much time you wish to devote to your studies.

In terms of costs, you'll find pricing varies significantly. At the highest end universities, you'll pay as much as you did for a four-year education for a Master's degree that's completed in half the time. However, online programs tend to be far more affordable and students will be able to use loans to help cover the costs.

Keep in mind that obtaining a Master's degree allows the student to further his or her career ambitions. You'll be more likely to get hired for the position you want. You'll find it is possible to secure the career you've been dreaming about or to move up in a current position you are in. And, you can do it all right from home.

University of Phoenix

University of Phoenix

The University of Phoenix (UOPX) is an American for-profit institution of higher learning, headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona, United States. The university has an open-enrollment admission policy, requiring a high-school diploma, GED, or its equivalent as its criterion for admissions. The university has 112 campuses worldwide and confers degrees in over 100 degree programs at the associate, bachelor's, master's and doctoral degree levels. It is a wholly owned subsidiary of Apollo Group Inc., a publicly traded (NASDAQ: APOL) Phoenix-based corporation that owns several for-profit educational institutions.

The University of Phoenix attained a peak enrollment of almost 600,000 students in 2010, but its numbers have declined to 227,000 as of 2015. The enrollment drop (and more than 100 campus closings) have been attributed to operational changes amid criticism of high debt loads and low job prospects for students of for-profit colleges.

History

The university was founded by John Sperling.[8] Started in 1976 in the Phoenix metropolitan area,[9] the first class consisted of eight students. In 1980, the school expanded to San Jose, California, and in 1989, the university launched its online program.

In 1994, University of Phoenix leaders made the decision to take the parent company, Apollo Group public. Capital from Wall Street launched the school. Phoenix had more than 100,000 students within the first five years of going public. Growth in the company made John Sperling a billionaire.

From 2010 until 2012 enrollment declined, reportedly from growth of competition and negative press.

Campuses

While the school specializes in online programs, the campuses offer additional programs and services. Online students are also able to use tutoring and social centers, which can also be used for social and student meetings. The first center opened in 2007 in Plano, Texas.

Students have access to class-specific online resources, which include an electronic library, textbooks, and other ancillary material required for a course. The university says that the electronic textbooks include search features and hyperlinks to glossary terms that make the books easier to use for research.

Academics

The university offers degree programs through seven colleges and two schools. These are named the School of Advanced Studies, School of Business, College of Criminal Justice and Security, College of Education, College of Humanities, College of Information Systems and Technology, College of Natural Sciences, College of Nursing, and the College of Social Sciences. In addition to its traditional education programs, the school offers continuing education courses for teachers and practitioners, professional development courses for companies, and specialized courses of study for military personnel.

Students spend 20 to 24 hours with an instructor during each course, compared with about 40 hours at a traditional university. The university also requires students to collaborate by working on learning team projects, wherein the class will be divided into learning teams of four to five students. Each learning team is assigned a team forum where team members will discuss the project and submit their agreed upon portions of the learning team assignment for compilation by the nominated learning team leader. The concept of learning teams is somewhat uncommon in traditional academia; however, the University of Phoenix believes that collaborating on projects and having individuals rely on each other reflects the real working conditions of the corporate world.

Through its online portal, eCampus, University of Phoenix students also have access to software required for coursework. Available, for example, are virtual companies created by the university to provide students with assignments, which Adam Honea, UOPX's dean and provost, claims are more realistic than those available with case studies. In August 2011, Apollo group announced it would buy 100% of Carnegie Learning to accelerate its efforts to incorporate adaptive learning into its academic platform.

Some academics and former students feel the abbreviated courses and the use of learning teams result in an inferior education. The University of Phoenix has been criticized for lack of academic rigor. Henry M. Levin, a professor of higher education at Teachers College at Columbia University, called its business degree an "MBA Lite," saying "I've looked at [its] course materials. It's a very low level of  instruction. In May 2008, the university announced the formation of the University of Phoenix National Research Center, designed to study which teaching methods work best for nontraditional students.

Admissions and financial aid

The University of Phoenix has an open admissions policy. In response to complaints about the use of financial aid by for-profit colleges in 2010 the university began an orientation program designed to lower dropout and default rates. Students must successfully complete a three-week orientation workshop in order to be eligible to start their first credit/cost bearing course. Students who do not complete the workshop after two attempts must wait six months before attempting again.

Phoenix recruited students using high-pressure sales tactics by admissions counselors who are paid, in part, based on their success in recruiting students.[24] Since 2010, changes were implemented to the way the university recruits students.

The university heavily recruits students and obtains financial aid on their behalf,[29] such as the Academic Competitiveness Grant, Federal Pell Grant, National Science & Mathematics Access to Retain Talent Grant (National SMART Grant), Federal Direct Student Loan Program, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant, Federal Direct PLUS Loans, Federal Perkins Loan, and the Wounded Warrior Project. For the 2008–2009 fiscal year, the University of Phoenix student body received more Pell Grant money ($656.9 million) than any other university.

USA Today has listed University of Phoenix as a "red flag" institution for posting a student loan default rate (26%) that surpassed its graduation rate (17%). The University of Phoenix's Detroit campus has a graduation rate of only 10%, but a student loan default rate of 26.4%. A 2010 report found that the University of Phoenix's online graduation rate was only 5 percent. According to collegecalc.org, tuition costs are typically 300% to 500% more expensive than community colleges.

Accreditation

The University of Phoenix has been regionally accredited since 1978 by The Higher Learning Commission (HLC) as a member of the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCA). In February 2013, a peer review group recommended to the HLC that the university be put on probation because the University of Phoenix "has insufficient autonomy relative to its parent .On May 9, 2013, the Apollo Group filed a report with the Securities and Exchange Commission which stated that the HLC Institutional Actions Council First Committee ("IACFC") had recommended to the HLC that the university retain its regional accreditation, but that the university be placed on "notice" for two years. Their concerns center on the university's governance, student assessment, and faculty scholarship in relation to PhD programs. The final decision will be determined on June 27, 2013, and sent to the university in the weeks thereafter.[38] On July 10, 2013 Apollo Group Inc. announced that HLC renewed University of Phoenix accreditation through 2023 and placed it on "notice" for two-years.

Some individual colleges within the University of Phoenix hold specialty accreditation or are pre-accredited by accrediting agencies that are recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.

School of Business – accreditation through the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP). Because Phoenix's business programs are not accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB), some companies will not provide tuition reimbursement for employees attending Phoenix.
College of Education – Master of Education is accredited by the Teacher Education Accreditation Council (TEAC)
College of Nursing – B.S. and M.S. degree programs are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE),
College of Social Sciences – The Master of Science in Counseling program in Community Counseling (Phoenix and Tucson campuses ONLY), the Master of Science in Counseling program in Mental Health Counseling (Utah campuses ONLY), and the Master of Science in Counseling program in Clinical Mental Health Counseling (Phoenix and Tucson campuses ONLY) are accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs (CACREP).

Marketing and advertising

Apollo Group, University of Phoenix's parent company, spends between $376 million and $655 million per year on advertising and marketing, which includes the University of Phoenix brand. Much of this advertising is Internet advertising.

The university paid $154.5 million for 20-year naming rights for advertising purposes of the University of Phoenix Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, a municipal sports arena, home of the NFL's Arizona Cardinals, and the site of the NCAA's Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. The university does not participate in intercollegiate sports.

Political and corporate alliances

Several American policymakers have been affiliated with the University of Phoenix and its parent company, Apollo Group. Former George H. W. Bush appointee and head of the US Department of Education, Margaret Spellings, has been a member of the Apollo Group Board of Directors. Jane Oates, a former staffer for Senator Ted Kennedy and Department of Labor official in the is currently a vice president at Apollo Group. US Representative Nancy Pelosi's close friendship with former University of Phoenix founder John Sperling has been documented by Suzanne Mettler in her book Degrees of Inequality. National Action Network's civil rights leader Al Sharpton has also been linked to University of Phoenix, as the sponsor of Education Nation on MSNBC.

University of Phoenix has also had alliances with The American Petroleum Institute  and the Boys and Girls Clubs of America. In November 2014, University of Phoenix partnered with 47 historically black colleges and universities to offer UoP classes that transfer to these institutions.

Some critics have referred to Apollo Group and University of Phoenix as criminal enterprises that prey upon veterans, women, people of color, and socially isolated individuals.

A co-founder of University of Phoenix, John D. Murphy, wrote in Mission Forsaken (2013) about the school's devolution from a provider of working adult continuing education programs into a money making machine whose sole criteria for admission was eligibility for federally funded student loans . University of Phoenix was also frequently mentioned in Suzanne Mettler's "Degrees of Inequality" and David Halperin's "Stealing America's Future: How For-Profit Colleges Scam Taxpayers and Ruin Students'

Reporter Aaron Glantz with the Center for Investigative Research has written about University of Phoenix's exploitation of veterans.

The University of Phoenix has been designated as a "dropout factory" by The Education trust.

Governmental lawsuits and investigations

The university has paid several government fines and settled whistle-blower lawsuits concerning its admissions practices and education programs. In 2000, the federal government fined the university $6 million for including study-group meetings as instructional hours. In 2002, the Department of Education relaxed requirements on instructional hours.

A 2003 lawsuit filed by two former university recruiters alleged that the university improperly obtained hundreds of millions of dollars in financial aid by paying its admission counselors based on the number of students they enrolled, a violation of the Higher Education Act.  The university's parent company settled by paying the government $67.5 million, plus $11 million in legal fees, without admitting any wrongdoing.

In 2004, the Department of Education alleged that UOPX again violated Higher Education Act provisions that prohibit offering financial incentives to admission representatives and pressured its recruiters to enroll students. UOPX disputed the findings but paid a $9.8 million fine as part of a settlement where it admitted no wrongdoing and was not required to return any financial aid funds.  The university also paid $3.5 million to the Department of Labor to settle a violation of overtime compensation regarding hours worked by UOPX's recruiters.  The University of Phoenix settled a false-claims suit for $78.5 million in 2009 over its recruiter-pay practices.

In 2008, the university was the top recipient of student financial aid funds, receiving nearly $2.48 billion. In 2009, the Department of Education produced a report that claimed the untimely return of unearned Title IV funds for more than 10 percent of sampled students. The report also expressed concern that some students register and begin attending classes before completely understanding the implications of enrollment, including their eligibility for student financial aid. In January 2010, the parent company Apollo Group was required to post a letter of credit for $125 million by January 30 of the same year.[79] In 2010, UOPX came under government scrutiny after its Phoenix and Philadelphia campuses were found to have been engaging in deceptive enrollment practices and fraudulent solicitation of FAFSA funds.

In 2014 the US Department of Education's Office of the Inspector General demanded records from the University of Phoenix and its parent company Apollo Group going back to 2007 "related to marketing, recruitment, enrollment, financial aid, fraud prevention, [and] student retention.

Students

People

The average age of a University of Phoenix undergraduate student is 33. The average graduate student is 36. The university states that nearly two-thirds of its students are women and that a plurality of students attending the school study business (undergraduate students representing 29.9% and graduate students 12.9%), followed closely by those enrolled in Axia College for associate degrees (28.1%).

The university graduates the largest number of underrepresented students with master's degrees in business, health care, and education of any U.S. school.

In 2013, the US Department of Defense ended its contract with University of Phoenix for military bases in Europe.

When calculated using the standards set by the Department of Education, the university's overall graduation rate is 16 percent, which, when compared to the national average of 55 percent, is among the nation's lowest. The federal standard measures graduation rates as the percentage of first-time undergraduates who obtain a degree within six years.

The university acknowledges the 16-percent graduation rate but takes exception to the standard used by the Department of Education to calculate the rate, saying that the rate is based upon criteria that apply to only seven percent of the university's student population. The university publishes its own graduation rate of 59 percent to account for its large population of non-traditional students.

Faculty

The university's faculty consists of approximately 1,500 core faculty and 20,000 associate (part-time or adjunct) faculty members who all hold graduate degrees.

UoP depends heavily on contingent faculty: 95 percent of Phoenix instructors teach part-time, compared to an average of 47 percent nationwide – . This reliance on part-time faculty has been criticized by regulators and academic critics. Most of the classes are centrally crafted and standardized to ensure consistency and to maximize profits. Additionally, no faculty members get tenure.

According to a university officer, pre-screened instructional candidates participate in a training program in the discipline in which they teach, which has the effect of weeding out 40 percent to 50 percent of the "less-committed" or -capable applicants.

African-Americans make up 18.6 percent of the university's 22,000 faculty members, and 5.6 percent are Latino [91] Women make up 57% of the faculty.

Adjuncts make approximately $1000–$2000 per course

Alumni

As of March 2010, 538,000 people had graduated from the university. Phoenix alumni in the government sector include White House cybersecurity coordinator Howard Schmidt, former U.S. Secretary of Transportation Mary Peters ('94), and member of the Utah House of Representatives Brad Dee ('91).

In military and law enforcement, alumni include U.S. Navy Admiral Kirkland H. Donald,[96] and Director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Harold Hurtt ('91). MSNBC anchor and a host of NBC's Early Today Christina Brown is also an alumna of the university.

Athletes who have earned degrees from the university include four-time NBA Championship-winner Shaquille O'Neal ('05), three-time WNBA MVP Lisa Leslie, and professional tennis player Michael Russell ('12).
